The Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed the Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2023 with voice vote, to amend the Cinematograph Act, 1952.
The Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on July 20 and now will be sent to the Lower House.
The Bill aims to address the issue of film piracy by transmission of unauthorised copies on the internet.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur termed piracy as a “termite”.
The Bill further proposes to replace the current 10 years validity period for film certification with perpetual validity and it also takes away the revisional power of central government in the light of Supreme Court judgement in Union of India vs KM Shankarappa.

The Uttar Pradesh government is considering a proposal to expand the Bal Shramik Vidya Yojana scheme to help 5,000 children across all 75 districts in the state, according to officials.
The state government has started the Bal Shramik Vidya Yojana, aiming to end child labour. “Presently, child labourers from 20 districts across different divisions are benefiting from this scheme.
The proposal for expansion of the scheme is currently under the consideration of the CM. Once it receives his approval, the scheme will be implemented in all 75 districts of up, connecting 5,000 children from all 7S districts with the scheme,” said Additional Chief Secretary Anil Kumar.

In order to mitigate the increasing human- elephant conflict (HEC), Assam launched the ‘Gajah Kotha‘ campaign, engaging over 1,200 people to foster coexistence.
The initiative targets HEC-affected villages in eastern Assam, and educates them about the elephants’ behaviour, ecology, and cultural connection to the region and the importance of their conservation.
Aaranyak and the British Asian Trust, in partnership with the Assam Forest Department and with support from the Darwin Initiative, are implementing this initiative as part of their efforts for fostering coexistence.
In Dibruagarh, the campaign was held at Konwabam, Panchukia Bongaon, Nahorjan Lebankula, Nagaghat Tantipather, Lebankula ME Schoolm and Kamargaon ME School.
In Tinsukia, the campaign was conducted in Ujani Sadiya HS School and Padumphula.

The scheme, launched on a pilot basis, is being implemented through the Indian Postal Department, the Indian Post Payments Bank, and the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Amid concerns over fake registrations and fraudulent availment of input tax credit under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, the GST Network (GSTN) made the geocoding functionality live for all states and union territories.
Geocoding, which converts an address or description of a location into geographic coordinates, has been introduced to ensure the accuracy of address details in GSTN records and streamline the address location and verification process, it said in an update posted on its portal.

The Assam government informed that it has decided to provide scooters to meritorious students who passed the Higher Secondary (Class 12) examination and will distribute 3.78 lakh bicycles amongst the students of Class 9 of the state.
The decision was taken during the state cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In this regard, Assam Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah informed that the state cabinet has decided that scooters to be provided to girl students who secured 60 per cent and above marks in the recently concluded Higher Secondary examination and for boy students the cut-off mark will be 75 % and above.

To promote use of nano fertilisers across the country, leading cooperative IFFCO will procure 2,500 agri-drones and train 5,000-odd rural entrepreneurs as part of its national campaign launched.
Already, IFFCO has signed an agreement for procurement of the drones, to be used for spraying of its products nano urea and nano di-ammonium phosphate (DAP), in a phased manner.
Along with drones, the cooperative will also procure 2,500 electric three- wheelers (loader types) to carry drones to farmers’ fields.
It is expected that one agri-drone would be able to cover 20 acres per day for spraying IFFCO nano fertilizers and bio-stimulants like Sagarika, Agro- chemicals etc with backup.
